Here is an exciting twist on a bourbon that wasn’t meant to be.
Chicken Cock introduces Double Oak Whiskey, an eight-year-old offering made from a bourbon recipe (80% corn; 11.5% rye; 8.5% malt barley) that is not technically a bourbon since it’s primarily aged in used barrels for 7-years before finishing in new American Oak for 18 months at Bardstown Bourbon Company. The whiskey was bottled at 92 proof and retails for $99.
The story behind Chicken Cock Double Oak began in 2014 when heavy rains hampered the logging industry, causing a barrel shortage that affected the American whiskey community. In response, Chicken Cock founder Matti Anttila aged his whiskey in used barrels. What began as a conundrum became a happy solution as the company now welcomes Double Oak Whiskey into Chicken Cock’s flagship lineup.
“You can’t have great whiskey without great wood, and this expression is the perfect marriage of age and wood,” said Anttila in a press release. “That’s why we aged our eight-year-old whiskey in American oak barrels twice. This process allows us to extract all the great flavor within the oak to create a robust and intriguing sipper.”

How Does It Taste?
Expect heaps of chocolate, berries, and coconut aromas from the used barrels, mingling with classic caramel imparted by the new American oak barrel. Flavors are a mash-up of influences by both casks, including vanilla bean, more berry fruit, and a complex collection of baking spices.
